The Douglas Lions Club
was chartered on February 18,1936 with some of the leading
citizens of Douglas as founding members.
For 76 years, members of the Douglas Lions Club have worked
consistently to support and fund sight conservation efforts
and other worthy causes through various fund raising
projects and service activities.
of the projects in the past have included annual county wide
polio inoculation drives, fly-ins at the airport,
door-to-door sales of brooms and mops (made by the blind),
sales of light bulbs, candy and fruit cakes were held. We
sponsored the Poultry Princess Pageant & BBQ and supported
the Lions EyeBank in Augusta. Along with the rest of
Georgia’s Lions Clubs, we sponsored the Georgia Peach Bowl.
We constructed Wheeler Park picnic shelter, which was
remodeled and re-dedicated on its 50th anniversary in
2007.We purchased the Veterans Memorial Wall that was re
-dedicated in 2006 and have added two additional memorial
markers to it in 2011 and is displayed at the courthouse.
For many years, the Douglas Lions Club and the American
Legion co sponsored the Southeast Georgia Fair. For the past
12 years, the club has been the sponsor of the Annual Big
Buck Contest which draws many hunting enthusiasts to our
area each year. We have seven fully funded scholarships at
South Georgia College and one scholarship was seeded in 2010
at Wiregrass Technical College.
Lions annually, through financial and physical means,
supports the Georgia Lions Lighthouse, the Georgia Camp for
the Blind, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexia, now re named
Learning Alloys, LeaderDog and Southeast Guide Dog programs
and Lions International as well as sponsoring several local
programs in our community each year, purchasing anywhere
from 200 to 400 pair of eyeglasses for local residents each
year. We budgeted a $20,000 donation over 3-year period to
assist Lighthouse in its move to larger facility the first
part of 2011.

Atkinson County with its own Lions Club. Certified Guiding
Lions from the Douglas Lions Club will help to nurture the
club in its formative time over the next two years. Douglas
also chartered a Leo Club at Citizens Christian Academy in
Five district governors have been elected from the Douglas
Lions Club and all have helped provide strong and effective
leadership for Georgia District 18B. With the re-districting
of our state into 4 districts in 2013, Douglas Lions Club
will be helping leading the way in this new state venture as
one of our Lions will be one of the first District Governors
in the new District N.As needed, many other members of the
club have served as chairs on various zone and district
committees over the years.
The Douglas Lions Club, that currently has a membership of
105 civic-minded men and women, is very appreciative of the
support that its community extends to it on each and every
project or fund raiser. This support is a huge part of the
club’s success with its many deeds within the community of
Douglas and surrounding areas.
Truly in every way, the Douglas Lions Club epitomizes the
motto of Lions International...‘We Serve!’
